Athena Orchard, uit het Engelse Leicester, werd vorig jaar december geconfronteerd met een zeer agressieve vorm van botkanker. Intensieve behandeling met o.a. chemotherapie en een zeven en een half uur durende operatie mochten uiteindelijk niet baten. 28 mei jongstleden verloor ze de strijd tegen kanker en stierf. Uiteraard tot groot verdriet van haar gezinsleden en andere direct betrokkenen. Niet alleen omdat 12-jarige meisjes niet dood horen te gaan maar ook omdat Athena een wijs meisje bleek te zijn. Zo ontdekten de ouders van Athena enkele dagen na haar overlijden een laatste ontroerende boodschap op de achterkant van de spiegel in haar kamer.

Natuurlijk is veel van wat Athena schrijft wat wij 'meisjes van 12 praat' zouden kunnen noemen. En zo hier en daar zouden we misschien ook nog wel stukjes en flarden tekst uit allerhande popsongs kunnen herkennen. Maar u kunt zich misschien wel voorstellen hoe ontroerend het voor de ouders van Athena moet zijn geweest om een dergelijke boodschap na het overlijden van hetgeen je het meest waardevol was, je dochter van pas 12-jaartjes, te ontdekken.
